Gone Fishin'

If you follow me on Twitter, you already know that my husband, baby, and I recently spent 10 days in Puerto Rico. My husband has been traveling there for a few months now on business. What you wouldn't have learned on Twitter is that that trip was a dry run for a much longer stay. A two- to three-year stay, depending on my husband's project. While Puerto Rican beaches are not as beautiful as the sugar white sand beaches of Pensacola (even typing that sentence makes me feel spoiled), they are still Caribbean beaches with the smells and sounds that make my heart sing. The chance to walk out the door and walk onto a still very pretty beach is too irresistible to this island girl at heart, currently landlocked in central Texas.I'm excited to finally be forced to learn Spanish, to explore more of the island and other islands in the Caribbean, and to have the boy learn about a different way of life.

He's already shown us that he's a huge fan of the beach, that he loves Puerto Rican dishes like mofongo and ceviche, and that he has the flirting skills to ingratiate himself with every Puerto Rican he meets.I doubt I'll have much time or opportunity to garden while we're there. We haven't finalized our accommodations yet but if we have to choose between ocean view and garden space, well, there really isn't a choice. But we do plan to find a place with a guest bedroom so please consider this your invitation to come. Execpt for a few pesky hurricanes, the weather is near ideal, high of 80, low of 70, even in August and September. So I won't say goodbye, just à bientôt! (Oh wait, that's French; guess i better start cracking on the espanol.)

Oops, my husband just pointed out that I forgot to add my usual disclaimer to this post: I've done this before 2010, 2009,and 2008. An extended sojourn in San Juan is within the realm of possibility, but we have no plans currently. You can't get rid of me that easily!

  1. Wow, that's huge, and pretty awesome, news. Hopefully the company your husband works for is better at estimating times than my dad's company - they told him he'd be on the east coast for 3 years, he ended up being there for 3 months before they moved him to the west coast.

  2. Wow wow wow. I'm saddened and happy all at once. Will miss you, of course, but tweeter and blogs reach all the Puerto Rico, don't they? And I'm also a bit envious; you can put me on that list of planned visitors, for sure! I'll get a food purchase list first so I can bring you flavors from home. Big news, Suzanne! What a fabulous opportunity.

  3. This isn't an April Fools' joke? I thought y'all were going to be there a few months, not a few years. How exciting!! Hope you'll add us to the list of visitors, too. Have to see that baby at least once a year!

  4. Iris, Yes, I just realized that this is likely Vertie's April Fool's joke since she does one every year.

Though to be fair, this is at least plausible. (way more so than Reality Blurred's claim that Survivor and the Amazing Race will switch casts after the season).

  5. Vertie's posting about this today made me a little suspicious, but I'm still not sure! Spill, Vert!

Our stay in Austin was supposed to be a 3-year project... here nearly 12.

  6. I'm with Annie, a bit suspicious due to the timing of this post. And why would you choose a beach over garden space? That just seems quite backwards. Incomprehensible, really. For that reason alone, I would say this is a Happy April Fool's Day post!

(Do they serve purslane in Puerto Rico? I know you love it!)

  8. I call shenanigans! Unless, of course, it's for reals, then I'm happy and sad at the same time! Can't wait for the next exciting installment of this cliffhanger...

  9. Well, you aren't owing up to an April Fool's joke so I guess this is for real. How wonderful and what an opportunity. I used to love it when my husband came home and said we were moving. I heard about a lot of wives who turned moves down but I was always ready, especially when we moved from Toronto to California. Exciting times ahead and I know who will speak the Spanish for sure.

  12. Great photos!! I have never been to Puerto Rico. This is my first time viewing your blog. Loved the previous post- too cute- or latest post rather. Going backwards... We have always wanted to go to Puerto Rico. We honeymooned in Roatan, Honduras and it was between that and Puerto Rico- not sure I remember why Roatan won but it did and it was beautiful so suffice it to say PR is still on our list. Hopefully you will start posting from there so I can "visit" there before we make it. Glad I found your blog! K

  13. Love this! My dad and stepmom live in San Juan PR and I spent so much time in Old San Juan that I recognized every photo...I could tell you where each of the street corners was. I miss mofongo, fried plantain, and tres leches cake. LOL
